Why Pursue an Audio Career? A Little Delulu, a Lot of Fun!
Hey y’all!
I’m Abi (or for adult wErk stuff, ABI THE PRODUCER), a 23-year-old music producer. Honestly, this blog started as a random 3 AM idea, but I thought it’d be a fun project- a place to share what I'm learning along the way and document the whole journey thang! Before I dive into more about the blog and all that fabulous jazz, let me start with a few details about where I’m at in my career. Gotta slay those formalities, ya know!
My Journey into Music Production
It all began at the wee age of 13 when I first picked up a guitar (an Epiphone DR-100). Inspired by Ed Sheeran, I developed a deep passion for songwriting and like a little hermit, spent countless hours in my room trying to play his songs- like Lego House, Tenerife Sea, and Give Me Love- and write my own. Fast forward to high school, I majored in music as a guitarist, building a foundation in both music theory and performance. To me, the vision was clear: I was going to "do" music. I kept writing song after song, and eventually, I mustered up the courage to share them with my parents and my grandpa, a professional drummer. They felt something was there, and with their support, I worked with a producer to release two songs (Hiraeth and Broken Butterfly), which are still out today floating on the interwebs, hehe! Being in the studio during that time planted the seeds for a shift in my dream- from singer-songwriter to music producer.
My Move Into Audio School
At 21, I enrolled in audio school at Pluto Studios in Tel Aviv, where I fell in love with all things music production and audio (and got infected with Gear Acquisition Syndrome LOL). After graduating nearly a year later, I launched my freelance career as a producer and began working at the plugin company Safari Pedals. There, I host The Safari Pedals Show—a podcast about my journey as a young producer—and create other content for the company. I’ve been doing all of this for about a year now.
Why Pursue a Career in Music Production?
Okay, now that the fun fluff is out of the way: WHY PURSURE A CAREER IN THE MUSIC BUSINESS? Isn't that, like, totally MF delulu??
To give a short answer: YES. I am a little delulu, and I believe you need to be a bit delusional and passionate to dive into an industry as wild as this. If I wanted something "classic" and stable, I’d probably become a nutritionist or something else! That would high key be a more responsible choice. But if you're in a creative industry like music, dare I assume you also feel this sense of purpose? Like you're on a MF SWAT mission to compress that snare or have an unwavering flame driving you. Call it girl math, but in my head, I figured it’s better to just do the damn thing than end up a regretful, resentful old granny (so, really, me doing music is saving a lot of future humans anguish). There’s no shame in taking the classic route; I just didn’t feel like it would work for me. That said, I have no idea what my career will look like in 20 years, but I’m definitely having fun along the way. To sum it up, I believe life’s too short not to at least try.
What’s Next for This Blog?
Now that I’ve done my fair share of babbling, where is this blog going? Great question! Honestly, NO IDEA! I’m just going to share whatever comes to mind- whether it’s a lesson I’ve learned, a cool production project and insights, or something new I’ve discovered about compressors. Who knows?! Again, this was a 3 AM idea :) So, I hope you enjoyed this little ramble. I’ll catch y'all in the next blog!
The Producer Chronicles- let’s goooo!
