The Magical Mastery of Fabrication (The Noble Art of Making Sh*t UP!)

As I continue on my merry little way, slowly advancing in my career as a music producer, I’ve come to a humbling and comforting realization: nobody really knows what tf they’re doing. We all wear different hats and walk different paths, but at the end of the day, everyone’s just figuring it out as they go. It might look different depending on where you are in your journey, but the truth is, we’re all technically in the same boat. And this isn’t just true in the music industry—it’s true about life in general (Can you tell I've been having major 23-year-old adulting realizations?!?).

The Not-Slay Illusion of Certainty

When I first started as a wee audio school padawan two years ago, I thought there’d be a moment when it all just clicked. A point where experience, credits, and DAW mastery lined up, and everything made sense. I imagined a magical moment when the mystery of music production would reveal itself to me, and I’d shapeshift into an all-knowing Compressor Goddess. But as time went on—yes, my skills improved, I got more efficient, and new opportunities came—yet that magical moment? Never arrived. (Womp womp womp).

The Paradox of Growth

What I’ve realized is that the more I learn, the more I see how much I don’t know. It’s a paradox: the more I grow, the more I realize how wildly vast music production ether really is. There’s always something new to master, another tool to try, or a fresh idea to explore. While I did want to live as an all-knowing Compressor Goddess for all of eternity, knowing I’ll forever be evolving as a producer is an exciting, uplifting prospect. (Also, another reason to buy more gear forever?? SIGN ME UP!!).

Embracing the Chaos

With this in mind, I’ve realized that if I embrace this as a "figuring it out" journey—chaos and all—it frees me up to be way bolder, more excited to try new things, and take bigger risks. It takes a lot of the pressure off, knowing that no adult floating around the adult world has everything 100% figured out all the darn time. We’re all making sh*t up, to some degree. ;)
